Madagascar’s president vows to rebuild his country after protests

(MENAFN) Andry Rajoelina, Madagascar’s leader, has vowed to make radical reforms in how Madagascar is run. This commitment follows recent violent rallies in the capital, triggered by rolling electricity failures as well as water scarcity, which prompted authorities to enforce a dusk-to-dawn curfew.

On Thursday, around five people have lost their lives in Antananarivo, the capital of the southern African country, during protests headed by youth-driven ‘Gen Z Madagascar’ movement. Demonstrators called for stable power as well as potable water, which they allege that they have been exacerbated by ongoing corruption as well as mishandling the situation.

According to the local news, the protests happened anyway even though they were officially banned, and escalated into conflicts with law enforcements, who launched tear gas and rubber bullets to break up the protesters. Protesters put cable-car stations on fire, plundered stores as well as allegedly assaulted the residences of 2 lawmakers.

On Sunday, the administration of Tana Water Front, a main shopping mall that was looted and burned, stated that “years of effort and labor, even a lifetime’s investment, were destroyed in a few hours.”
