China Calls on UN to Lift Unilateral Coercive Measures
"History has proven that unilateral coercive measures are one of the culprits for international turbulence and disarray in world order," Fu stated in a joint declaration on behalf of a coalition of 28 UN member states. These nations, spanning multiple regions, strongly oppose the continued use of such measures.
Fu pointed out that developing nations bear the brunt of these actions, with their populations suffering the most. He emphasized that the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development advocates for equal development opportunities for all nations and calls for the removal of economic, financial, or trade sanctions that violate international law and the UN Charter.
"Regrettably, despite the global call to urgently lift unilateral coercive measures, the imposition of these illegal measures continues to cause devastating, sometimes even life-threatening consequences, to targeted countries and their peoples," Fu added.
The ambassador also outlined the severe repercussions of unilateral sanctions, including secondary sanctions and over-compliance, which worsen existing humanitarian and economic crises. These measures, he argued, threaten the stability of global supply chains and jeopardize food, energy, and financial security worldwide.
Fu further criticized how such sanctions undermine the global economic system and hinder progress toward achieving the UN's Sustainable Development Goals. He also highlighted the direct violation of fundamental human rights, particularly the right to life, health, education, and development.
"We are also concerned that unilateral coercive measures and over-compliance have limited the ability of affected countries to access and acquire foreign investment and technologies, and hinder international cooperation in culture, arts, sports, travel, people-to-people exchanges, and transports, including civil aviation," Fu said.
In his closing remarks, Fu reaffirmed China's opposition to such measures, urging Western countries to honor their commitments to the UN Charter and international law. He called for the immediate, unconditional, and complete lifting of all sanctions.
Fu concluded by appealing for solidarity among UN member states, the UN itself, and other global organizations to oppose unlawful sanctions and assist affected countries in addressing their challenges.
"The current circumstance calls for solidarity and unity rather than confrontation and division to address global challenges and promote and protect human rights for all," Fu said.
