Pakistan, Afghanistan Consent to 48-Hour Truce

(MENAFN) Pakistan and Afghanistan separately declared on Wednesday that they have agreed to a temporary ceasefire, which was later put into effect, aiming to defuse escalating tensions along their shared border.

Pakistan’s Foreign Office confirmed the agreement, stating that at Afghanistan’s request, both nations consented to a 48-hour truce. The Foreign Office emphasized, "During this period, both sides will make sincere efforts to find a positive solution to this complex but solvable issue through constructive dialogue."

Meanwhile, Afghan government spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid took to social media to confirm the ceasefire, explaining that the initiative came at the insistence and request of Pakistan. Mujahid added that the Afghan government has ordered all its forces to uphold the ceasefire, provided the opposing side refrains from initiating any attacks.

This announcement follows several days marked by intense cross-border firing between the two countries. Earlier on Wednesday, Pakistan’s security forces reportedly launched strikes targeting locations in Afghanistan’s Kandahar and Kabul provinces, according to security sources.

The fragile truce signals a critical opportunity for dialogue amid ongoing volatility in the region.
