Australian Senator Denounces Canberra’s Role in US-Israeli Strikes on Iran
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced that Australia is sending surveillance aircraft, air-to-air missile stockpiles, and 85 military personnel to the United Arab Emirates to help defend against “unprovoked attacks” by Iran. Albanese emphasized that Australian forces would not engage in offensive operations against Iran.
Speaking in the Senate, McKim accused the government of misleading the public. He argued that Australian personnel and equipment “will be used in such a way to boost capacity for the United States and for Israel to continue to rain down horror on the Iranian people [and] to continue to bomb schools and hospitals in Iran.”
McKim also criticized the Labor government for its support of the US-Israeli campaign, saying, “Labour was the first government anywhere in the world to cheer on Trump and Netanyahu’s illegal war. It was embarrassing, it was mortifying, watching Prime Minister Albanese obsequiously toady his way onto the international stage while the war criminals Trump and Netanyahu committed war crimes.”
Following the initial US and Israeli missile strikes on February 28, Albanese and Foreign Minister Penny Wong issued a statement expressing support for the attacks, saying, “We support the United States acting to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon and to prevent Iran continuing to threaten international peace and security,” while also claiming, “Australia stands with the brave people of Iran in their struggle against oppression.”
