Humanitarian Groups Urge EU to Suspend Israel Agreement, Arms Transfers

(MENAFN) Over 60 humanitarian organizations and trade unions have called on the European Union to suspend its association agreement with Israel, alongside demands to halt trade with illegal settlements and stop all arms transfers.

In a joint letter released on Thursday by Amnesty International, the groups urged the EU to “adopt the long-overdue measures proposed by (European Commission) President von der Leyen in September 2025, in particular the suspension of the EU-Israel Association Agreement.”

The appeal also called for additional steps to ensure compliance with international law, including a ban on trade involving illegal Israeli settlements and the suspension of all transfers and transit of weapons to Israel.

The organizations stated that the EU has already determined Israel to be in breach of Article 2 of the EU-Israel Association Agreement, citing violations of human rights and democratic principles. They argued that recent developments in Palestine and Lebanon have further intensified this breach and contributed to widespread human suffering.

The letter also referenced Israel’s death penalty legislation for Palestinians, describing it as “an egregious violation of the rights to life and fair trial of Palestinians,” and said it reflects what they described as a “growing body of discriminatory legislation and policies implemented by Israeli authorities against Palestinians.”
