India Can Process Venezuelan Crude to Support Global Oil Supplies— Rubio

(MENAFN) US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Tuesday that Indian energy companies could process Venezuelan heavy crude and help ease pressure on international oil supplies during his visit to India.

"They can, and we'll talk about that tomorrow," Rubio said in response to a question about whether Indian refineries could handle larger volumes of Venezuelan petroleum.

He pointed to Reliance Industries as an example, noting that the company had previously refined Venezuela's heavy crude and possessed the technical expertise needed to restart processing as additional supplies became available.

Rubio described India as a "refining superpower," highlighting the importance of its extensive refining infrastructure in supplying energy to international markets.

He also noted that Indian companies already hold oil concessions in Venezuela that could support increased production. Although Venezuelan crude alone would not eliminate global supply shortages, he said additional output could provide significant relief in the short term.

According to Rubio, New Delhi appeared prepared to explore the opportunity, but several technical and legal challenges would need to be addressed before operations could advance.

"There might be a few impediments that stand in the way in terms of sanctions and so forth that we'll have to work through pre-existing sanctions on the Maduro regime," he said.

The US secretary of state emphasized the strategic importance of reliable energy supplies, stating that "energy is related to national security," and warning that disruptions to energy access could trigger armed conflicts and severe economic breakdowns.
